Avon was named after the River Avon which ran through it and had six districts: Bristol, Bath, Woodspring, Northavon, Kingswood and Wansdyke. Avon formed in April 1974, taking in the City and County of Bristol and parts of Somerset and Gloucestershire. The main towns and cities included Bristol, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Bradley Stoke and Nailsea.
Avon was replaced by four authorities: The City and County of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. However, Avon is still recognised in some quarters - eg Avon and Somerset Constabulary and Avon Fire Brigade.
